Arachnaphobia

So I don’t just cook.  Surprising, right?  I also do biology stuff, some of which involves frolicking running about in the great outdoors.  I think I’m a pretty critter friendly kind of gal.

I’ve rescued baby birds and squirrels, and even rats.  Rescued a few grown squirrels, too (from the cats).  Word to the wise, they bite like, well…rodents.  A can/squirrel grabber or thick gloves can be very handy in these situations.

Kitchen Kat is not the culprit in that story.  He is definitely indoor only kitteh material.  Like, afraid to stick more than his head out the door!  The kitchen is a good place for him 🙂

I really don’t even mind insects.  But spiders…. we’re talking a whole different ballgame here, kids.

I think I was initially warped by that whole Little Miss Muffett thing.  Then I found out what curds and whey are, and was further warped.

When I was a kid, we lived out in the country.  In the woods, by the bayou.  Sound familiar?  And yes, this is the place I’m actually planning on building our palace on the bayou!

One memorable night, a spider crawled out of my hair onto my face while I was trying to get to sleep.  This was the first infringement of my personal space by the aforementioned beasties.  Needless to say, Mom and Dad were not amused by the bloodcurdling screams issuing from my bedroom after lights out.  Especially after they saw the tiny culprit on my bed.  Sensibly, I had abandoned said bed and was clinging halfway up the built-in bookcases on the other side of the room.

There were always the banana spiders.  At least, that’s what we called them.  Big, but at least they mostly stayed in the trees.

Unless you weren’t watching where you were going and walked into a web.  That story ends up with a GIGANTIQUE spider plastered across your face.  😦

Then there was the night of the tarantula.  Now, there are tarantulas that live in the woods out there.  Large wolf spiders are much more common, but the occasional tarantula happens.  When I saw the tarantula in my bedroom, I ran into the other room to get my Dad, as there was no way in Hell I was getting close enough to combat the huge thing.

Guess what?

I never slept in that room again.

I suppose I should be thankful that we of the Western Hemisphere do not have any species of spider that eagerly looks to take on a human.  And wins.

I hear stories from Australia that make my toes curl.

Meet the Sidney Funnel Web spider.  With inch long fangs that will pierce LEATHER.

Those inch long fangs dripping venom make a tarantula look friendly.  Almost cuddly.

Remember that trip of a lifetime to Australia that you always wanted to take BEFORE you learned that almost all of the wildlife, terrestrial, aquatic, and marine, as well as the plants, were just waiting for their window of opportunity to kill your goofy butt for invading their territory?

Don’t know about you, but I’ll be going to New Zealand.  I like sheep.  Sheep are just fine. As a bonus, they only have 4 legs!

Even when they insist on nibbling at my clothing.

Jackets are replaceable.  😛

Caturday in the Kitchen

It’s that time again.  A day of rest, relaxation, pampering…

Who am I kidding?  It’s only a week until Christmas!!!  And I have a list at least a mile long.

I don’t see how Santa does it!  😛

We are going to the Alley Theatre this evening to see “Santa’s Naughty Diaries”.

Now, I realize this is the time of year for Dicken’s Christmas carol (which we have seen at least 6 years running), or the Nutcracker Suite (which I danced in for several years, and then went every year for 10 years at least).  So, I’m a bit tired of traditional Christmas entertainment.

Thus, we will be seeing the ‘Naughty” for the first time.  I hope it’s hilarious.  This time of year, everyone needs a good laugh!

AND…another holiday requires holiday food.  So today, I’m letting our feline friends take over.  Kitchen Kat has a posse it seems.  😛

Moroccan Stew

I’m going to briefly apologize to anyone and everyone who came by to see yumtastic food last week, and I wasn’t here.  My Mum’s dog passed on to the happy green fields of Doggie Heaven last week, so I’ve been over at The Parent’s house more than at my own.

Kitchen Kat has been lonely.  😦

Today, I was feeling spicy.  Not Baby Spice or even Posh Spice, but Moroccan Spice.  Which means smoked paprika and cinnamon as the theme for this dish.

There’s a lot going on in this dish, but the flavors meld beautifully, and again…one pot cooking for the win!

It seems that I always begin with sauteing onion and garlic. Celery also, lately.

But it smells so good!  Also, I watched a couple of tutorials the other day on how to dice and onion, and now I need to practice.

This dish is vegetarian, but Hubby and Rat Boy raise such Banshee Queen wailing a fuss when I try to feed them anything vegetarian.  So I added some sausage.

After a couple more minutes of browning, I added some veggie stock.

Then, cubes of butternut squash, sliced carrots, chopped plum tomatoes, and quartered new potatoes.

Here’s hoping the hand isn’t too scary.  🙂

I ended up using the rest of the carton of stock, to cover all the veggies.  It’s 32 oz, so that’s 4 cups.

Wow!  I just did math in my head.  Correctly!  😛

The interesting part of this stew, I think, is the spices.  Cinnamon, cumin, coriander, and smoked paprika.  Of course, salt and pepper, too.  Cook until the veggies are tender, about 30 minutes.

Then I added these groovy sweet peppers I found the other day at Whole foods, because they are pretty (and tiny).

Some coconut milk…about half a can. Plus a can of garbanzo beans, rinsed.  I always have some garbanzo beans hanging around, as I never know when I might get the burning urge to make some hummus!  😛

I let it simmer on low, no lid,  while I made some rice.  Naan would have been just awesome with this, but since I didn’t happen to have any on hand, I just went with rice.

Kitchen Kat was keeping an eye on me from his stealthy location inside the cupboard.

Please ignore how messy it is in there.  Kitchen Kat likes to rearrange things, not necessarily in the best order…

At least he is out of the dishwasher.  😛

Finally, I arrived at Moroccan stew with rice!


It was very savory, but not spicy at all from the paprika.  To give it a kick, you might use half smoked and half Hungarian paprika, as it’s a bit spicier.  Was great for a day like today, though…not hot, but not really cool, and cloudy like it couldn’t decide whether it would be worth the trouble of actually raining.

I think I would definitely make it spicier on a really cold day!  🙂
